10 SMMC Newsletter 25 June 2025
Principal's Message
Most of our students won’t recognise this quote, but some of our Parents might: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Of course it was from the brilliant film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. Even though it will be forty years old next year (What?) it is still a must watch and rewatch movie. This quote is a great reminder for us to pause and appreciate all the amazing things happening around us in the busyness and haste of the time. This Term our students have participated in so many sporting, cultural and art projects, worked hard to achieve academic success and united as a ‘sisterhood’ for community days and charity events. Some of the highlights for me included the We Will Rock You musical, seeing the passion of our Samaritan Angels as they sew items for others each week, sitting with Elders at the Sorry Day Morning Tea and meeting with each of our Teachers about the joys of their teaching and their goals for themselves and their students.

It has also been a challenging Term for Teachers as continue to rewrite unit programs for the new Version 9 Curriculum and revise programs in the Senior school. This is all on top of their day to day workload of teaching, marking and assessing. I pray that all our Staff have a restful and enjoyable break over the holidays.
We wish our QISSN team well for their upcoming competition in Bundaberg. I am looking forward to joining the team for the week and cheering on the sidelines. Here is a program of their games - make sure you check out the Livestream:
Monday: 7.30 am - Unity College vs SMMC
Monday: 9.30 am - SMMC vs Rockhampton Grammar
Monday: 11.00 am - Cathedral College Rockhampton vs SMMC
Tuesday: 1.30 pm - SMMC vs St James College Brisbane
Tuesday: 3.00 pm - St Columban’s College Caboolture vs SMMC
Wednesday: 9.30 am - SMMC vs Canterbury College Waterford
Wedneday: 11.30 am - SMMC vs Siena Catholic College Sippy Downs
Finals - games to be confirmed

We are also excited for our QISSRL team who are competing in their 4th Confraternity event next week in Rockhampton. Our girls have been training hard and are ready for the tough competition. They too would love a big crowd supporting them on the Livestream. Their games will be played at the following times:
Monday: 9.30 am SMMC vs St Patrick’s College Mackay
Monday: 2.30 pm - SMMC vs Shalom College
Tuesday: 9.20 am - SMMC vs Emmaus College Rockhampton
Finals - games to be confirmed

Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 AFL team last week. They won all four of their games! Ksenia was name MVP for the Youth Female Division.

Well done also to our Readers’ Cup Team who achieved Second place in both the Year 7 and 9 teams in their competitions recently:

Staffing Update:
We are sad to be farewelling Ms Elnaz Kalaly Fard who is leaving us at the end of this Term. Elnaz has been teaching in our Science Department for the last six months and is moving to Brisbane to start a new position.
We thank Mrs Sarah Daniels for her caring and compassionate work as the Year 10 Pastoral Middle Leader. She is definitely not leaving us but returning to the classroom full-time. Sarah will be replaced by Mrs Renee Deuble who is an experienced Science and HPE teacher coming to us from Ignatius Park College. Renee has a passion for pastoral care and is looking forward to meeting our Year 10 Students and Parents.
Next Term we are also welcoming Ms Chyane Trusz, a new School Officer who will be assisting our Students in the Inclusive Education department. Chyane is replacing Jessie Jackson who resigned a few weeks ago to take up a position with NDIS.
New Extra-Curricular Student Agreement:
A new process comes into effect from the start of next Term where Students who join a new sporting team or cultural activity must acknowledge that they have read and agreed to the guidelines for participating in extra-curricular activities. We have noticed an increasing number of students missing school and not meeting assessment deadlines, but expecting to represent the school in different teams or activities. School work needs to be the priority and hopefully this new Agreement will remind Students of the importance of their education. Parents will be asked to discuss the Agreement with their daughter before they approve their participation in the Compass Event.
Planned connecting with pre-teens and teenagers
Finally, holidays are a great time to reconnect with your teenage daughters and family members after a hectic Term. Here are some useful tips from the Australian parenting website RaisingChildren.net.au about how to strengthen relationships with teenagers:
Tips for planned connecting:
- Schedule time together. You need to find a time that suits you both. Initially, it can help to keep the time short. Try going tech-free if you can - enjoy the sun and the fresh air or pack a picnic and take a day trip.
- Let your daughter choose what you’ll do, and follow their lead. This will motivate them to want to spend time with you. It’s also fun to try activities where your daughter is the expert – teaching you a new skill can boost your child’s confidence.
- Concentrate on just enjoying their company. Try to be an enthusiastic partner and actively cooperate with what your child is doing. The activity itself is less important than shared fun and talking with your child.
- Be interested and accepting, rather than correcting your daughter or giving advice. It’s not easy to give up the teaching and coaching role, but this is a time for building and improving your relationship. So if you see a mistake or an easier way to do something, let it go without comment.
- Keep trying and stay positive. At first, your daughter might not be as keen as you to take part in these activities. Keep planned times brief to begin with, and she will come to enjoy this time with you.
- Never underestimate the value of sitting around the table at dinner time. Here are a few easy Conversation Starters to build into your routine.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Inspirited by Faith and Mission
This term our Year 11 Study of Religion classes have been looking at sacred texts through the Three Worlds of the Text. This involved them researching the World Behind the Text to discover what audience the author was writing for and what was happening at the time. The World of the Text requires them to look at the genre and structure of the story. And finally, the World in Front of the Text which involves delving into how a text written over 2000 years ago can have relevance for us today. They did a wonderful job of this and it has been a pleasure reading their responses.

One of the stories they chose from was the story of The Samaritan Woman at the Well from the gospel of John 4:1-42. It is one of my favourite gospel stories as it is a wonderfully rich text with so many messages.
You are probably familiar with it – but here it is a nutshell: Jesus, tired from travel, pauses at Jacob’s well in the Samaritan town of Sychar around noon. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink, breaking cultural norms between Jews and Samaritans. Jesus tells her, “If you knew the gift of God…you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” He contrasts temporary physical thirst with eternal spiritual fulfillment, and this is something that she seeks - to never thirst or have to return to the well. Jesus reveals personal details: she has had five husbands and is now with a man who isn’t her husband. She doesn’t deny this, and her honesty is welcomed. She decides He is a prophet and discusses proper worship and the coming Messiah. Jesus reveals plainly: “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.” Her initial belief becomes personal recognition. The disciples return; the woman leaves her water jar and goes into town to testify: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.” The woman moves from simple curiosity – to belief - to deep faith!

So, choosing faith means choosing to trust, act and belong - even when certainty is out of reach. That depth of trust and commitment is exactly what belief alone can’t provide. And this reminds me of another story I’d like to share.
Charles Blondin was a French tightrope walker. In 1859 he first walked across Niagara Falls on a tightrope that was 335 metres long and 49 metres above the waterfall. With a balancing pole, Charles Blondin walked across in only five minutes. He then crossed back again, blindfolded. Next, he walked across pushing a wheelbarrow. When he got to the other side with the wheelbarrow he was congratulated, and one man said to him: “That’s superb! Wonderful!” Blondin said to him: “Do you believe I can walk back again with the wheelbarrow?” “Yes,” said the man in great admiration. “Do you believe I can walk back across the tightrope with someone in that wheelbarrow?” Again, the man said “Yes, you can do it!” Then Blondin asked him: “Will you get into the wheelbarrow?” - but the man refused! The man believed firmly that Blondin could take a person back across the tightrope in the wheelbarrow. Believing it, wasn’t enough, because there’s a difference between belief – the ‘head knowledge’ and faith - trust based on experience. He didn’t have the personal faith to trust and place himself completely in Blondin’s hands.
Lord, may I become more aware of your presence in my life. May I discover that you do walk with me each day of my life, accompanying me in darkness as well as in light, in sadness as well as in joy. May your Spirit lead me to trust and come to know that you keep your word and are always faithful and loving. I place myself and my future into your hands. Amen

Catholic Education Week
In Week 3 next term we will celebrate Catholic Education Week. On Monday 28 July the Diocese will celebrate the Sirit of Catholic Education and Deus Caritas est Awards at a liturgy. The following day our Bella Voce will be providing their beautiful voices for the Diocesan Catholic Education Week Mass. The college will acknowledge the week with a liturgy on the Friday of that week, during our assembly time. All are invited to attend.
Watch this space for updates and wonderful pictures of the events.

Blanket Drive
Vinnies Refugee Assistance Program (VRAP) is looking for winter blankets and doonas to donate to refugee families in Townsville. If you have any spare blankets or donnas at home, please consider sending them in to school with your daughters. We will collect them and pass onto VRAP.

Report Cards for Year 7-12 students
On Friday, 27 June, students in Years 7-12 will have their report cards released into the Compass parent portal (under the ‘Reports’ Tab). It is important that parents take the time to read these report cards with their daughters in order to make goals for the following semester. Parent-Student-Teacher interview bookings will also open on Friday afternoon for parents to book 10-minute bookings with their child and her teacher. Interviews will take place on Thursday, 24 July from 3:30pm - 6:00pm.
Important Information for Year 10 Parents
Our Year 10 students have begun the process of preparing for senior study. All Year 10 students have heard presentations from Curriculum Middle Leaders about the subjects on offer here at the College. They have also had access to the 2026 Senior Subject Handbook which can also be accessed here. Students have made some initial subject indications in order to assist the College with forming the Year 11 subject lines for 2026. In Term Three, students and parents will attend a Senior Schooling Information Evening and a Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) Interview. This will assist students and parents to make informed decisions based on the student’s intended pathway. Please ensure you keep an eye out for the booking details for these interviews.
Attendance at School
At SMMC, we know that consistent attendance at school is essential for student success. Every lesson counts. Regular attendance ensures students are engaging in their learning, keeping pace with assessment demands and developing the skills they need for post-school pathways. Absences- in all year levels- can quickly impact academic progress and confidence. We encourage all families to prioritise attendance, support students in maintaining healthy school routines and to contact the College if additional support is needed. Together, we can help every Maggie achieve success.

Inspired by Community
Whilst it may leave one feeling breathless that we have reached the halfway mark for the year, it is also remarkable to look back and consider all that has been accomplished over these last two busy terms. We are proud of the way our students have committed to their studies and adapted to the routines of their school days. This includes the ritual of dressing for success each morning, as in any workplace.
It is no secret that our College prides itself on holding high expectations for the professional way our students dress for their day of learning. Our expectations are not new and are clearly outlined in the Student Learning Journal. Some gentle reminders to keep our students in the right mindset for learning day, each day. The holidays are a good time to do a stocktake of hats, socks, ties and badges in readiness for Term 3. Please keep in mind:
- Have the hat and wear it - formal broad brimmed hat with the formal uniform and sports hat with sports uniform
- College tie and badge everyday when wearing the formal or semi-formal uniform
- Plain white crew length socks
- Complete removal of all facial piercings for the school day.
- Replacement of cartilage piercings with a clear piercing.
- 2 x plain studs or sleepers
- Removal of false tinted eyelashes
- Removal of colour acrylic nails
- Natural hair colours
- As we move into cooler weather, students are permitted to wear the College standard jumper and jacket only
Your children deserve a well-earned rest over this mid-year break and we hope they catch up on sleep, physical activity, and enjoy time with family and friends. However, it is also important to remember the importance of settling them back into the school routine a few days before school starts again in Term 3:
- Get back into your sleep routine: Begin your child’s usual school sleep routine a few days before school starts, with regular night and morning bedtimes
- Re-establish school routines: Not only with sleep, but also daytime meal times that match the school timetable
- Make sure the home study station is tidy and organised for the start of term
- Start reducing screen time a few days before the start of term: monitor and manage your child's online time during the day and at night. Encourage them to engage in non-screen activities, like reading, to transition them back into the school routine.
- Boost up their immune system: the combination of winter and holiday travel can be an easy time to be susceptible to picking up and spreading viruses, especially when heading back into classrooms. Boost your child’s immune system with foods that are high in vitamins and minerals: vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D and E, and copper, folate, iron, selenium and zinc.
Attendance
The College is very focused on improving the attendance of our students and celebrating their time in the classroom. Whilst we appreciate that some absences are unavoidable, we wish to reinforce that children with less than 90% attendance at school, regardless of the reasons, are at risk of struggling to stay in control of their learning and assessment.
On Friday, we will also acknowledge students achieving over 95% attendance. All students in each year level who have achieved 95% and over attendance for Semester One will go into a draw for a $10 gift voucher. The PMLs will draw out a student from each year level who will receive a gift voucher.
From The Resilience Project Team - Mindfulness
Working on mindfulness gives us opportunities to develop our ability to pay attention to the present moment and our thoughts. Practising mindfulness daily can help us stay focused on set tasks and reduce stress and anxiety.
Whole Family Activity:
Mindful Walk:
As a family, go on a walk outside in nature. This might be around your local walking track, at your local park, or just around your streets.
While walking, tune into your senses and observe what you can see, hear, and feel. Or you might choose to focus on one of the senses. E.g.: Hear: what are all the noises you can hear on your walk?
On your way home or when you return home, share what each person saw, heard, or felt.
Family Habit Builder:
Each night at dinner, ask everyone to take one mouthful of food more mindfully than the rest and think about the flavours they can taste and how it makes them feel. (They can also thank the chef!).
For Parents:
If you have some quiet time or a road trip planned, you might like to listen to The Imperfects Podcasts: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/at-home/podcasts/
From the Pastoral Team, we wish all of our families a restful and safe time with your children. We look forward to working with you again in Term 3.

Career Development
Empower your daughter with the skills to make informed decisions in Senior Education
Subject Selections, SET PLANS, QTAC Applications, ATAR requirements, Alternative Pathways, Early Offers, and the list continues.
Term 3 comes with a lot of firsts for our students. For our senior students in Years 10 - 12, decisions need to be made to set students up for success as they continue along their learning pathway.
The Year 10s are currently starting conversations in their Skill for Work lessons and meeting with our dedicated Curriculum Middle Leaders regarding the transition to senior education. At the same time, other students in various year levels, but especially our seniors, are seeking the connection between the curriculum and what comes next, and how they can make informed decisions towards a purposeful pathway, after school.
Tertiary Education, workplace expectations, and skill prerequisites and requirements vary across institutions and states, and vary depending on the student's pathway requirements and their learning needs.
While next term we will host parent information evenings and Career expo events for students, should you find your daughter (or even yourself) unsure about the big decisions coming up in Term 3, and would benefit from discussing these in greater detail. Please reach out to Marianne Milani, (mmilani2@smmc.catholic.edu.au
First Nations News
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 10!
The last two weeks have been dedicated to the celebration of our NAIDOC week, which started on Monday with the Flag Raising Ceremony and ended on Friday with our whole school activities. These events take a lot of organising, practicing and commitment from staff, students and special guests. What an amazing day!
Flag Raising Ceremony
On Monday the 16th June our school held a Flag Raising Ceremony to kick off our NAIDOC Week celebrations. The students took great pride in raising our flags. It is important to understand the significance of flying the three flags, the Australian flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag. Thank you to staff, our Year 11 students and community members who were able to attend this event.

NAIDOC Week
On Friday the 20th of June our school celebrated NAIDOC with a Liturgy and shared activities from 11am. A big ‘Shout Out’ to the students who also ran some of the activities too. The leadership skills that they displayed on the day did not go unnoticed from staff and special guests. I would like to give a special thanks to Geoff Lui who came in to present on Torres Strait Islander Culture and History. He is a wonderful and engaging presenter! We have received many positive comments on the day. Thank you to Cowboys House who donated some Cowboys Vs Storm tickets for prizes for our “Move it Mob Style” dancing! The students really enjoyed this activity and four lucky winners have received tickets to the upcoming home game. Another big thank you to our Library staff who again put together a beautiful display in our Library.

Jezzine Barracks - Year 7 Cultural Engagement
Every year our First Nations Team takes our Year 7 students out for a Cultural Walk at Jezzine Barracks. This day includes a “Walk Talk” about the Cultural Significance of the land to its traditional custodians. The students also spend some time doing some sports and art activities. This year, the excursion will take place on Wednesday the 25th of June. Please see Compass for more details.
A special thanks to Mrs Krista Hobbs from the First Nations Team at Townsville Catholic Education who will be hosting the “Walk Talk” with the students and also to Ms Hannah Bell for volunteering to run the art activities.

QLD Schoolgirls Rugby 7s State Championships
Recently, St Margaret Mary’s College was proudly represented at the QLD Schoolgirls Rugby 7s State Championships in Toowoomba by Keely (U18s), Chloe (U16s), and Mr Mitch Bebb (U16s Coach) as part of the Northern region teams.
Over three action-packed days, both teams played eight intense matches in some seriously icy conditions – Toowoomba felt more like a fridge than a footy field! But the cold couldn’t stop our girls from showing heart, hustle, and serious talent.
Chloe’s U16s team capped off their tournament with a bronze medal win, edging out Sunshine Coast 15–14 in a nail-biting final match!
Keely’s U18s team battled hard across the weekend to finish a strong 6th in a highly competitive field. Adding to the success, Mr Bebb, who also serves as the QLD U16s Head Coach, finalised his State team to compete at Nationals this July.
We’re incredibly proud of Keely and Chloe for their efforts, sportsmanship, and how they represented SMMC on and off the field.

Arts News
Melodies and Mocktails
Our Hospitality and Arts departments partnered last week to host a successful inaugural event, "Melodies and Mocktails." This occasion provided our students with the opportunity to showcase their talents through musical and dance performances, as well as the presentation of thoughtfully prepared food and creatively crafted mocktails. The Arts courtyard was transformed into an inviting space for our guests, and our Visual Arts students' work was displayed in the theatre. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of our staff and students who contributed to the organisation and success of the event, as well as our staff, alumni, family, and friends who attended. We received positive feedback from guests, and we hope to make this a regular occurrence. Additionally, we raised over $480 for Cancer Council Queensland in support of members of our college community impacted by cancer.

Year 10 World Dance Workshops
Year 10 students have been enjoying completing a World Dance unit. They have learnt dances such as the Hora (Israel), Savila Se Bela Loza (Serbia) and the Virginia Reel (USA).
Special guest, Jessica Murgha, owner of Aviemore Highland Dance, shared her experience with the students. She challenged them to learn a number of traditional Highland dances, testing their endurance with each pas de bas. Ellie Murgha and Chloe Willis led the demonstrations and helped students reach new heights with their high cuts.
Stacey Seri shared her passion and knowledge of Irish dancing with the students as they leapt over brooms and danced hand in hand, learning a traditional Céilí dance and a brush dance.
To finish the unit Theo Koulakis shared his love of Greek dance with the students, ensuring that they smile and embrace the joy of the culture.

Year 8 Dance - Glen Thomas Workshop
Year 8 Dance students were treated to a workshop by the experienced industry professional, Glen Thomas.
He fused traditional contemporary dance technique with traditional First Nations movement. Glen led students through a warm up and travelling combinations that challenged them to experience a new way of moving through the space.
